Dr. Lynne Holden is an emergency medicine doctor in Bronx, New York and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Burke Re- habilitation Hospital and Montefiore Medical Center. She received her medical degree from Temple Univer- sity School of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years.
Dr. Holden is the co-founder and President of Mentoring in Medicine, Inc. (MIM). MIM is a national nonprof- it organization dedicated to inspiring an equipping students to become
health care professionals through academic enrichment, leader- ship development, civic engagement and mentoring. Through con- ferences, hip-hop plays, school-based and virtual programs, MIM has reached nearly 15,000 students from elementary school through medical school.
MIM has been featured in numerous media outlets including The New York Times, Lifetime TV and CNN. Dr. Holden has been named a 2007 Maybelline NY-Essence Empowerment through Education Award- ee, a 2009 Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation Com- munity Health Leader, a 2010 Root 100Leader and a 2010 Life- time TV Remarkable Woman.
When asked what led her to visit
Mount Olive Ministries, Dr. Holden
responded that it was a call she
received from the National Institute of Health (NIH). Dr. Holden stated, “Dr. Michael Cheetham, a senior advisor at NIH, told me that you have to meet Tony C. Duckworth from Mississippi.” According to Dr. Holden, she received Mr. Duckworth’s cell number and called to acquire a visit to Mississippi. Duck-
worth stated, “I was shocked to receive a call from Dr. Holden. On top of the call, she wanted to come to Miss- issippi and work with our students.”
Using a pig’s heart, Dr. Lynne Holden allowed the stu- dents to take a look into the heart. After giving a short presentation on the parts of the heart and their functions, groups of students were given a heart to closely observe and successfully labeled each part of the heart.
