Grace Christian School (GCS) hosted its first annual walk-a-thon, one of the many fundraisers to keep underprivileged students in school. Each year since 2014, GCS loses approximately 10 to 15 students due to lack of sponsorships. Many GCS parents’ income ranges from $12,000 to $18,000/year, so the students participated in the Walk-a-Thon to help cover their tuition.

On October 14, 2017, the city of Mount Olive closed down Main Street with orange traffic cones redirecting traffic and police officers patrolled the streets. Citizens on ATVs passed out water elderly home owners excitingly waved as the students looped around Main
Street, and car horns were blown in support. It was many of Grace Christian School’s students first time participating in a Walk-A-Thon. The students walked and ran wearing the biggest smiles. Tony C. Duckworth, Sr. stated, “The students were smiling because the city made them feel important by closing down Main Street to support their effort to remain in school.”

Chloe McDonald (6th grade student) shared, “I thought it was cool for the city to close down the lanes for us.” Cliff Kelly, the Mayor of Mount Olive, coordinated with GCS to make sure the event was a success. “The event was emotionally encouraging – par- ents, grandparents, friends, and GCS staff walking to support our students,” stated Duckworth.

The students proudly finished the 5K (3.1 miles) walk dripping sweat yet still full of energy. After completing the Walk-a-Thon, students and parents shared funny moments that occurred during the event. The goal was to raise $10,000 to assist with five students’ tuition at GCS. According to Duck- worth, GCS first annual Walk-a-Thon raised $7,431. If you would like to sponsor a student(s) or become
